If you are like me, then you are a Catholic, who loves the Blessed Mother and can’t stop learning about the many times she has continued the mystery of the visitation and her intercession for people without their asking. While there are many apparitions of Our Lady that require verification, the real ones usually don’t need much investigation because you can verify them.
These ongoing miracles are not with secrets but they are ongoing because, as a human, they defy human wisdom. A painting on a wall, that’s not surface deep, but penetrates layers of rock — does it leave doubt about the hand that created the painting? Looks like the hand that created the rock is the same hand that created this painting. Look out for the miraculous painting and the story of Our Lady of Las Lajas1, one of my favorite apparitions for the sheer beauty of Our Lady.
Now, if painters are accustomed to signing their own paintings, would not the Lord wish to impress His fingerprints on the work of creation? In this regard, when analysing the image of Our Lady of Las Lajas imprinted on stone, Dr. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira commented that it was “the point in the universe where God signed His work, like an artist. And He signed it with the figure of His Mother.”2 It could not be otherwise: God crowned creation with a Marian seal!
Mysterious aspects of the unique painting
This lofty analogy is reflected in the mysterious nature of the painting itself. Recent studies and drillings into the stone have shown that the image is impressed in such a way that its shapes and colours penetrate the interior of the rock. In other words, if we were to peel away a thin layer of the painting, we would find the same image behind it! Furthermore, it was exposed to the elements for over one hundred and fifty years without suffering any deterioration. 3
